There are 2 million podcasts in the world, and the industry is valued at $1 billion, but the entrepreneur Ginni Saraswati said podcasting is still in its infancy compared with other entertainment mediums. For example, YouTube had 37 million channels in 2020.
“Even though it seems like every person and their dog has a podcast, it’s still quite early,” Saraswati told Insider.
After 10 years of working in broadcast radio, she started her own podcast in 2016. People began asking her how they could create their own shows at the same time she realized a need in the industry for production services. While working a full-time job, Saraswati helped other podcasters with audio editing, show notes, and artwork.
In 2017, Saraswati quit her job, moved from Australia to New York City, and launched her podcasting company, Ginni Media. Today the company provides services like audio production, album art, and distribution for a network of 42 podcasts that total about 90,000 monthly downloads, Saraswati said.
Her business has nearly doubled every year, generating $232,000 in 2019 revenue and $507,000 in 2020 revenue, which Insider verified with documentation. Her team has also grown from eight employees to 26 in the past year.
The media founder shared her daily routine, as told to Insider, which includes going to the gym, journaling, and breaking for tea.
